Norris, Dr. Albert 'Ab' Stanley
Dr. Albert “Ab” Stanley Norris, 83, of Iowa City died Friday, Oct. 16, 2009, at Mercy, Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City. Burial at the Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour before services Wednesday, followed by a reception at the funeral home that precedes the burial at the cemetery.
Ab was born July 14, 1926, in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, the son of William and Mary Norris. Following graduation from The University of Western Ontario Medical School in London, Ontario, he continued his graduate training in Psychiatry at the University of Iowa, and as a teaching fellow at Harvard Medical School. He returned to Canada in private practice but soon returned to the Psychopathic Hospital in Iowa City to teach, do research and clinical practice. In subsequent years, he continued in academia at The University of Oregon Medical School, and then became the first Chairman of Psychiatry at the newly established medical school in Springfield, Illinois. From 1977 to 1978, he took a year long sabbatical teaching around the world. Following a period of private practice in Cedar Rapids, he partially retired but continued to do locum tenens around the United States.
In 1963, he proudly became a naturalized U.S. Citizen. Ab was honored to be a Fellow of The American Psychiatric Association, a Member of Society of Sigma Xi, included in American Men of Science and World Who's Who in Science. In addition to his many published articles, Ab authored Psychiatry for the Family Practice Physician.
Ab was an avid traveler and enjoyed music, books, gardening, family time and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Ab is survived by Dorothy “Jimmie” (James), his wife of 59 years; daughter, Barb (Larry) Eide; son, Bob (Kathy); and daughter, Kim (Larry) Reves; grandchildren, Jay (Katie) Eide, Jamie (John) Boedeker, Jeff Eide and Tyler McGowan; and great-grandchildren, Logan and Kayla Eide and Jack Boedeker.
In addition, he has many nieces and nephews who reside in Canada and Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Henry and Eddie; and sisters-in-law, Fay and Rita.
