Staab, Berdell J.
Berdell J. Staab, 83, died Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, of a brief illness at the Vinton Lutheran Home, where he was admitted Dec. 8. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 20, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Vinton, with the Rev. Clarke E. Frederick officiating. Interment will be held at St. John Cemetery, Newhall. Friends may call at the church from 9:30 a.m. until service time Monday. A memorial fund has been established. Phillips Funeral Home, Vinton, is in charge of arrangements.
Berdell was born April 11, 1927, at Van Horne, to Howard and Anna (Froelich) Staab. On Sept. 9, 1950, he was united in marriage to Joyce Bistline at Clarion, Iowa.
He was employed as a machinist at Iowa Manufacturing for 41 years and farmed near Van Horne. An active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, he attended the men's Bible study, enjoyed fellowship in the Fireside Club and served as an elder for many years. In his leisure, he enjoyed playing cards, bowling, golfing and fishing.
Berdell is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Joyce of Van Horne; his sons, Roy (Lois) Staab of Cedar Rapids, David (Kim) Staab of Vinton, and Gerald Staab of Vinton; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; his sister, Selma Kaiser of Vinton; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Kenneth Staab; his sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Keith Weekley; his brother-in-law, Glenn Kaiser; and his daughter-in-law, Charlene Staab.
