Borschel, McDonough honored Sunday

Apr. 5, 2010 5:56 pm
University of Iowa NCAA champions Jay Borschel and Matt McDonough will be honored in a ceremony Sunday at the Linn-Mar High School Auditorium, starting at 4 p.m.
The pair were teammates for the Lions during the 2004-05 season before reuniting in Iowa City as teammates for the Hawkeyes. Both wrestled for current Linn-Mar coach and former Hawkeye All-American Doug Streicher.
Borschel, a four-time state champion, winning titles at 103, 125, 152 and 171 at Linn-Mar, won the 174-pound NCAA Division I title with a win over Cornell's Mack Lewnes and capped a perfect senior season at 37-0. He is just the 19th wrestler in Hawkeye history to produce and unbeaten season. He completed his three-year career at Iowa with a 98-10 record. He was a three-time NCAA qualifier, placing third in 2008.
McDonough, a three-time state champ and four-time state placewinner, claimed the 125-pound NCAA title as a red-shirt freshman, topping Iowa State's Andrew Long in the finals. McDonough became Iowa's first freshman NCAA champion since Lincoln McIlravy in 1993.
The public is invited to attend to watch a video presentation of each wrestler. Both will be available to sign autographs at the event.
