Lynch, William C. 'Bill'
William C. “Bill” Lynch, 91, of 1715 Pikes Peak Ct. NE, Cedar Rapids, passed away Monday, July 5, 2010, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy following a short illness. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. The Rev. Lloyd Brockmeyer of St. Paul's United Methodist Church will officiate. Entombment with military honors at 10 a.m. Friday in Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Surviving to honor his memory are his wife, Sharon; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jack, Herb, Tom and Dicky; and his sister, Nancy.
Bill was born Oct. 19, 1918, in Vinton, Iowa, to John J. and Cecile (Crager) Lynch. He graduated form Lincoln High School in 1937. He worked as a bell hop at the Montrose Hotel in Cedar Rapids, until being drafted into the Army in May 1941. He proudly served three years overseas during World War II in the North African Campaign and European Theatre. He was a proud member of the 34th Division known as the Red Bull, 168th Infantry Company H. He was awarded four Bronze Battle Stars.
Bill came home from World War II in May 1945 and started working in the Vinton Post Office in the fall of 1946 as a carrier and clerk. He retired as a supervisor in January 1979.
Bill married Sharon Beving in Wellsburg, Iowa, on Oct. 14, 1961. They lived in Vinton, until moving to Cedar Rapids in October 1985. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. He enjoyed swimming, bowling, golfing, gardening and watching Big Ten basketball and football in his leisure time.
Military honors provided by Vinton American Legion Post No 57.
A memorial fund has been established.
