Ed died Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013, following a short illness at the Iowa City VA Health Care Center surrounded by his loving family.

Edward Elmer Vorel was born Aug. 25, 1919, in Ely, Iowa, the son of Louis and Agnes (Marash) Vorel. He joined the United States Army in 1942 and served in Central Europe, Normandy, France and Germany. He was discharged in 1945. In 1962, he was united in marriage to Kathleen Schillig. She died in 1982. Throughout his life, he lived in Hills. They had one daughter, Arlene.
Ed worked at many jobs, including U-Smash Um I Fix Um and retired from the City of Iowa City. He enjoyed gardening, especially growing raspberries. He loved fishing and setting bank lines with his son-in-law, Scott Johnston.
Ed was an avid reader and had many magazine subscriptions which he loved to share with family and friends. He loved his weekly outing with Arlene, especially going to the Kalona Bakery. His favorite was rhubarb pie!
Ed's grandsons were the apple of his eye and he enjoyed spending time with them. A family favorite was the annual Fourth of July celebration where family and friends would gather in his front yard to watch the parade in Hills. Ed enjoyed attending the monthly potlucks with his friends at the Hills Community Center.
Survivors include his daughter, Arlene and husband Scott Johnston, and his two grandsons, Ethan and Taylor Johnston, all of Iowa City; and one brother, Leonard and his wife, Delores, of Tiffin.
Preceding Ed in death were his wife, Kathleen; one brother, Marvin; and his parents, Louis and Agnes Vorel.
The family of Ed Vorel would like to thank the staff at the Simpson Memorial Home in West Liberty and the VA hospital staff for all their kindness and loving care of Ed.
