TWO-WHEELER TRAGEDIES: Iowa's early arriving spring has, sadly, been accompanied by a spike in deaths involving motorcycle and mo-ped drivers and passengers in Eastern Iowa. As of late last week, a total of six such fatalities in Johnson, Linn and Black Hawk counties had been recorded during March. The string of accidents is a grim reminder for all motorists to be on the lookout for those often hard-to-see two-wheelers of all kinds, including bicycles. And motorcyclists should exercise extra caution as the riding season resumes and they need to polish driving skills that may be rusty after not being used for several months.

LIBRARY DELAY: Asbestos-tainted debris from 19th century school buildings that once stood on the site being excavated for the new Cedar Rapids Public Library across from Greene Square Park will delay the project up to four weeks and add $1.3 million to costs, city officials reported last week. At least the extra expense will be covered within the project's contingencies' budget. Let's hope there are no more such major surprises or delays in this important community project.
