Farrell, Edward
Edward Farrell, 93, of Strawberry Point, died Monday, March 7, 2011, at his residence. Memorial services: 11 a.m. Friday, March 11, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Strawberry Point. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Inurnment, with military rites by Strawberry Point American Legion Post 218, will be at Cass Township Cemetery, Strawberry Point.
Edward was born March 4, 1918, in Volga, the son of Edward and Lucy (Frederich) Farrell Sr. He was raised and educated in Volga and lived on the family farm with his uncle, Frank Farrell. Edward helped on the farm until he enlisted in the United States Army.
Edward entered the Army on March 6, 1941, and became a member of the 701st Military Police Battalion during World War II. He was a member of the first Military Police ever formed. Edward earned the American Defense Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Sharp Shooting Medal, Efficiency Honor and Fidelity Medal, American Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. Edward was honorably discharged on Sept. 10, 1945.
On June 6, 1945, Edward was united in marriage to Eleanor Nolan. He and Eleanor began farming eight miles northeast of Strawberry Point and farmed for over 30 years. Eleanor died in 2003.
Edward loved to hunt mushrooms and fish. He also enjoyed helping the Strawberry Point community in any way he could. Edward was a member of the Strawberry Point American Legion.
He is survived by his children, Mary (Roy) Ickes of Hendersonville, N.C., Audrey (Charlie) Besler of Dundee, Bernie (Diane) Farrell of Lake St. Louis, Mo., Kathleen (Stephen Pendleton) Farrell of Portland, Ore., and Connie (Mark) Morarend of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Maxine Almina Farrell of Charles City.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Eleanor; two sons, Danny and Jimmy Farrell; two brothers, Joe and John Farrell; and seven sisters, Lucille, Pat, Irene, Calista, Marian, May and Millie.
