Boys' basketball notebook: CVC looks for conference

CEDAR RAPIDS -- They've found a home in the Iowa High School Athletic Association. Now they want to find a home in a conference.
Cedar Valley Christian's bid to join the Tri-Rivers Conference was thwarted last week when its member schools unanimously voted against adding the tiny Cedar Rapids parochial school. That was disappointing news for athletics director and boys' basketball coach Jeff Pospisil.
But he thinks CVC will land somewhere - eventually.
"I just think there's a big shakeup going on between the Tri-Rivers, the Big East and the Cedar Valley," Pospisil said. "And it's really just going to be up to the state to decide how they sort that all out. I think there are a lot of teams that want to move, then there are schools like us that want to get into a conference. I do think it's volatile enough to where we'll get in somewhere."
In the meantime, the Huskies play as an independent. That's one big reason why the school has just two home games this winter.
The first is Jan. 14 against Fulton (Ill.) Unity Christian, the second is Feb. 4 against Waterloo Christian. That's it.
"It is tough to stay patient," Pospisil said. "Teams have been very cooperative with us. We've had schools call and want to play us. It's not like we're having a real struggle getting games.
"But we're typically playing games on a Thursday night or back to back on Friday and Saturday nights, and they're both away. Kind of the leftovers. That makes it tough."
As does not playing anyone twice. All 21 regular-season games for CVC are against different opponents.
"We don't get to learn from playing them once and then get a chance to play them again," said Pospisil, whose team is 5-4. "It's kind of one-and-done all year."
Around the hoop
- MFL/Mar-Mac's C.J. Mason hit nine 3-pointers in a 78-66 win over South Winneshiek on Tuesday night. Mason finished with 33 points. His trey total is tied for most in the state in a game this season.
- You don't often see the same guy leading the state in scoring and rebounding. You never see that guy being a sophomore. Well, almost. Jeremy Deemer of Lamoni tops the state in points per game (31.9) and rebounding (18.1). His team is 6-2.
- As we head into the Winter break, six schools from the area remain unbeaten. And they represent all the classes: Keota (8-0) and Lone Tree (7-0) in Class 1A, Monticello (8-0) in 2A, Waverly-Shell Rock (7-0) in 3A and Cedar Rapids Jefferson (7-0) and Iowa City West (7-0) in 4A.
