Mitro, Terry Elaine
Terry Elaine Mitro, born Feb. 21, 1958, in Iowa City, Iowa, passed away Saturday, March 27, 2010, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, following a battle with cancer. She was 52. Celebration of Life service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 1, at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. The Rev. Don Dovre will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Williamsburg. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
The daughter of Kenneth H. Gibson and Carolyn J. Manges, Terry graduated from Kewanee High School in 1976 and the Moline Public School of Nursing in 1979. Terry then went on to receive her bachelor's degree from the University of Iowa in 2003. On Aug. 12, 1978, she was united in marriage to Phillip Mitro at St. Marys Catholic Church in Kewanee, Ill. They lived in Fortt Belvoir, Va., Vicenza, Italy, Fort Monmouth, N.J., and Rock Island, Ill., and have lived in Williamsburg since 1988. She was a volunteer for the Williamsburg First Responders. Terry's happiest moments were when she was surrounded by her children, grandchildren and family. She also enjoyed camping, canoeing and long drives.
In Terry's professional career she worked unselfishly for 22 years to serve the veterans at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. As a registered nurse she worked in many departments, but found her home as the cardiology manager of the Cath Lab. She loved going to work every day to be with her second family.
She is survived by her husband, Phillip of Williamsburg; daughter, Stephanie (John) Burnett, and two sons, Brian and Christopher Mitro, all of Williamsburg; four grandchildren, Trevor Safina, Matthew Burnett, Bethany Burnett and Aiden Burnett; three brothers, Kenneth (Jodi) Gibson of Woodstock, Ill., Laurence (Jenny) Gibson of Mahomet, Ill., and Joseph (Lisa) Gibson of Plymouth, Ind.; and an uncle, Wayne (Anna) Youngblut of Lisbon.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial fund has been established for the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center.
