A survey released Thursday shows 37 percent of Iowans do not subscribe to high-speed Internet service at home, primarily because they don't believe there is content worth viewing and the service is too expensive.
Connect Iowa said a survey of 3,600 Iowa residents conducted in the summer months found 62 percent of low-income households and 66 percent of seniors are without high-speed Internet service at home. Forty-two percent of low-income households with children are without access.
Broadband is defined as wired or wireless Internet service with a minimum download speed of 768 kilobits per second and upload speed of 200 kilobits per second for transferring data.
Forty-five percent of rural Iowans do not subscribe to broadband Internet service at their home. The median cost -- $47.90 per month -- and lack of computer ownership were reasons cited for not subscribing to high-speed Internet service.
