Clear Creek Amana boys, Solon girls rule 2021 Wamac track meet
Clippers pull away from Marion late; Spartans compile a whopping 175 points

May. 6, 2021 9:48 pm, Updated: May. 6, 2021 10:26 pm
INDEPENDENCE — Tom Johnson expected the final race to be a climax, a winner-take-all affair.
Instead, it was a Clipper coronation.
“It was nice to have that pressure taken off,” Johnson said after Clear Creek Amana put the finishing touches on a Wamac Conference boys’ track and field championship Thursday night at Leinbaugh Field. “We definitely shattered expectations.”
Projected in a dead heat with Marion before the race, the Clippers won in fairly comfortable fashion, winning eight events — including five relays — and compiling 144 points. Marion was the runner-up with 119.
“I just can’t describe it,” said Johnson, who won the 800-meter race solo and was on three gold-medal relays. He started the 1,600-meter relay knowing the Clippers had things in hand.
“We have the best coach in the Wamac in (Ben Robison), and we wanted to win it for him.”
Harrison Rosenberg was the 110-meter hurdles champion, Gavin Zillyette led the field in the 400 hurdles, and the Clippers had all that relay power.
“We worked so hard to get here,” Rosenberg said. “A couple of weeks after the season started, we knew we had a strong team.
“This was definitely a good effort. The bus ride home is going to be loud.”
Solon’s girls did the expected and won their portion of the competition convincingly, accumulating 175 points. Williamsburg was second with 97.5.
“Coach (Brent) Sands always tells us not to underestimate who we’re going up against,” said Solon’s Emma Bock, a four-event champion. “You never know who is going to show up.”
The Spartans obviously did, winning eight events. Bock anchored the winning sprint medley and 1,600-meter relays in addition to her 400- and 800-meter triumphs.
Kaia Holtkamp was another star, running on three winning relays.
“I like those team wins over individual wins,” she said. “That makes the whole team have success.
“They hardly announced team scores during the meet, so we were able to compete like we were still chasing (in the team race).”
Other stars from Thursday’s meet included:
- Marion’s Alex Mota, the champion of the boys’ 100 and 400.
- Benton Community’s Jacob Brecht, who won the boys’ 200 and anchored the Bobcats’ triumphant 800 relay.
- South Tama’s JoJo Tyynismaa, a girls’ triple-winner (100, 200 and 100 hurdles). She was second to Marion’s Madison Prier in the 400 hurdles.
