CEDAR RAPIDS -- Still surprised by the success of the boys' basketball team at Cedar Rapids Kennedy?Jon McKowen isn't."I know we've surpassed expectations of a lot of other people, but not mine," McKowen said after the Cougars improved to 14-4 with a 59-52 triumph over Cedar Rapids Washington in a Mississippi Valley Conference contest Tuesday night at Kennedy High School.A.J. Carter and Drew Heitland scored 17 of the Cougars' 20 fourth-quarter points after Washington pulled even, 39-39, heading into the final 8 minutes.Yes, Kennedy has a new coach in McKowen. No, the Cougars don't have a lot of size.Big deal."We've just got to keep continuing to build," McKowen said. "We're getting close to where I want us to be. We played a really good first half, then we let them back in it."Kennedy (10-3 MVC) led 32-23 at intermission before a barrage of 3-pointers -- Jared Printy, Jacob Kramer and Steven Kramer combined for four of them -- allowed the Warriors (4-14, 4-9) to draw even. Then Carter and Heitland did the heavy lifting to carry the Cougars home.Carter scored on a drive, then Heitland got a couple inside baskets to send Kennedy to a 45-39 advantage. The Cougars led the rest of the way."I felt, with their foul trouble, that they couldn't guard us the right way," McKowen said. "A.J. cut to the basket, and Drew was much more aggressive tonight."Carter led all scorers with 23 points, 16 in the second half. Heitland added 11 points and eight rebounds.Printy tallied 13 to pace the Warriors. Jacob Kramer and Maurice Arrington added 12 apiece.
