Bettendorf edges Washington as top-rated team in 4A

Bettendorf is a slim pick over Cedar Rapids Washington as the new No. 1 team in Class 4A football.

The Bulldogs earned more first-place votes (5-2) and more points (68-65) than the Warriors in the new Gazette/KCRG/KGYM poll, released Monday afternoon.

Bettendorf is one of two new top-rated teams. Clear Lake is the other, taking over the top spot in Class 2A.

The other four No. 1s remain the same - Pella in Class 3A, Fort Dodge St. Edmond in 1A, Maquoketa Valley in Class A and Exira/Elk Horn-Kimballton in Eight Man.

Bettendorf and Washington (both 4-0) each moved up a spot after easy Week 4 victories and a loss by previous No. 1 West Des Moines Dowling, which fell to West Des Moines Valley, 24-21. Dowling, Valley and Waukee, all 3-1, are ranked third, fourth and fifth.

Washington has won 10 straight regular-season games, routing Linn-Mar, 43-3, last week behind a 36-point second quarter that featured two blocked punts for touchdowns and an interception for another score.

Xavier (3-1) remains No. 2 in 3A behind Pella. The Saints blew out DeWitt Central, 59-3, Friday. West Delaware (4-0) is third.

Clear Lake (4-0) moves up in 2A after former No. 1 New Hampton was beaten by 1A No. 3 South Winneshiek, 18-7. The Chickasaws dropped to No. 7.

St. Edmond (4-0) maintains a slight lead over Iowa City Regina (3-1) and South Winn (4-0) in 1A. Maquoketa Valley and Exira-EHK have led their respective classes since preseason.
