The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has agreed to review key aspects of the reactor containment design used at NextEra Energy's Duane Arnold Energy Center at Palo and 22 other reactors in the United States.
The non-profit group Beyond Nuclear had submitted a 8,000-signature petition to the NRC in April 2011 seeking the immediate suspension of operating licenses for the U.S. reactors using the same General Electric Mark I containments as the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan, where a meltdown and radioactive release took place after an earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.
