DYERSVILLE – So often on football teams chasing a championship, a team leader will step up in a crucial situation and carry that team to victory.Last night in Dyersville in a second-round state playoff game on the road, Class 2A No. 4 Waukon got one of those performances out of running back Marcus Weymiller in a 48-14 demolition of Dyersville Beckman.Weymiller did it all on offense, carrying, catching and throwing the ball for 341 all-purpose yards and five total touchdowns.“It's playoffs, and you've got to step up,” Weymiller said. “God gave me this opportunity, and I've got to take it.“It feels awesome, because it's something you dream about as a little kid.”Weymiller carried the ball 16 times for 166 yards and two touchdowns, and caught all five of quarterback Parker Hesse's passes for 124 yards and three touchdowns. He also had a halfback pass to Jacob Ronan for 51 yards. That kind of production is what Waukon has relied on all season, and is what the Indians will hope for the rest of the way in these playoffs.“He's a great athlete,” Waukon Coach Chad Beermann said. “This year he's been able to stay healthy. As we get (farther) into the playoffs, he's going to get a heavier and heavier load.“He's turned it on and getting a chance to shine.”For Hesse, nights like Weymiller's make his job fun and easy. The Iowa recruit gave a big laugh when asked what it was like watching his teammate run all over the Blazers' defense.“With our offensive line and the stuff (Weymiller) can do, it takes so much pressure off me,” Hesse said. “My job is easy. I'm just the one that does the talking, that's pretty much it. I get to have fun.”Waukon may have had some fun in the win, but coaches and players are dead serious about what they want to do.A loss to undefeated New Hampton on Oct. 25 took away a chance at a district championship, as well as home field advantage, and served as a refocusing point for the team that spent much of the season atop The Gazette's Class 2A poll.To avenge that loss and push forward towards their goal of a title, the Indians know they'll have to be at the top of their game with a rematch at New Hampton on Friday.“We've had some untimely penalties (in other games), and what we've been trying to preach to them has finally sunk in that we need to cut that out,” Beermann said. “We need to be physical and eliminate the penalties (against New Hampton).”
