To the editor:
As a longtime Cedar Rapids volunteer, business person and active community member, I know how critical it is to have elected school board members who have a solid vision for our community's future, what's in the best interests of students, and the ability to listen to many viewpoints in their decision-making process. John Laverty is exactly such a person.
I've known John and his wife, Anne, for many years. They're dedicated parents of two children who attend the Cedar Rapids schools. I've seen him work with other board members, school administrators and community stakeholders to help shape the future of our school district. I personally have seen the efforts to ensure that the district is on a solid financial footing during the recent economic challenges.
He has been engaged in efforts to bring new learning opportunities to the school district to meet the needs of our businesses, community and society in the future. New project-based learning programs like Project Lead the Way, Johnson STEAM Academy magnet school, METRO STEAM program, the Roosevelt option program, and partnerships with Kirkwood Community College and area trade organizations. He's also helped ensure that school facilities are modernized when appropriate, has looked for new areas of growth and believes in investing in core neighborhoods.
We need the experienced leadership, dedication, and vision that Laverty brings and I urge you to vote for him on Sept. 8.
