Police have arrested an Iowa City man for a robbery that occurred almost six years ago.
Richard Lee Scott, 31, of Iowa City was arrested June 10 for a robbery that occurred at El Paso store at 609 Hollywood Blvd. in Iowa City in October 2004.
Police said Scott entered the store with an accomplice, Destry Hughes, with the intention of buying beer. When Scott approached the clerk to pay for the beer and the cash drawer was opened, Scott allegedly pulled out a silver handgun and pointed it at the clerk demanding all the money in the drawer.
According to officers, Hughes then reached over and stole the contents of the the register while Scott grabbed one of the beer bottles and smashed it over the clerk's head.
Officers said they were able to locate a fingerprint on the neck of the bottle that police later identified as Scott's.
Police said Hughes confirmed Scott's actions during the October robbery.
Scott is currently being held in the Johnson County Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond for a first-degree robbery charge. Hughes was charged with first-degree robbery in the case in 2004. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced in September 2005 to 10 years in prison.
