Iowa City bars that let winners on their video game machines redeem tickets for booze may be breaking the law.
Assistant City Attorney Eric Goers sent warning letters to bars this week. Goers says that though the games are legal under Iowa law, a local city ordinance prohibits awarding alcohol as a prize.
The college town has been trying to combat binge drinking in its students and its image as a party school.
Bar manager Mark Puerling says customers usually redeem tickets for alcohol, not food or other beverages.
Puerling says taking away the alcohol incentive in Iowa City will simply chase customers to bars in nearby towns that don't have the same rules.
