What happened to put C.R. in a coma?

Doesn't it seem like the city of Cedar Rapids has been asleep for 20 years while the world passes it by? Compared to the vibrant neighboring cities of Dubuque, Waterloo and even little ol' Marion, I can't think of one major development, no new major businesses, no new schools, no new recreational facilities, no casino - no new anything.
When I was attending Loras College in Dubuque in the '50s, I always thought of Cedar Rapids as one of Iowa's finest - vigorous, youthful and full of opportunity. What has happened? What caused it to fall so far behind? I hear the word “vision” a lot but it is all talk and no walk. Doesn't anybody care anymore?
