Letter: It is a sad day for public schools
Jay Smith
May. 17, 2016 1:00 am
It's really sad that schools can find money to pay for athletics in elementary grades, but they can't find money to continue teaching Spanish or keep librarians. Aren't schools supposed to teach students? What's wrong with sandlot baseball or community sports?
The May 9 article 'C.R. fifth-graders sign up for a difficult mission: Saving Spanish” about the petition to keep Spanish is a great effort for young students, but in the next sentence they were getting their baseball team to sign at practice.
Why are we paying for elementary baseball when they can't afford to keep Spanish in the classrooms?
