I support Monica Vernon for mayor of Cedar Rapids.
She has been my colleague on City Council. I've witnessed her leadership and ability to work with all people. She knows what it takes to lead our city and she continually envisions a brighter tomorrow for Cedar Rapids. Her caring heart can be seen in her work in every corner of our city.
I met her when I worked for the state after the 2008 flood. She was easy to get to know and there when I needed her. She worked hard day and night for our community's recovery.
She solves problems in ways that create wins for everyone. She knows our city from growing up here, serving 10 years on Planning Commission, eight years on Cedar Rapids City Council and six years as mayor pro tem.
She is kind but tough. She's open-minded and inclusive. She has the courage to make tough decisions, while keeping her eye on what's best for the entire community. She has been a leader for better streets. She'll examine priorities, timing and plans for our roadways and share them with the people.
She built a small business. She's recruited and kept jobs here. She knows how to secure flood protection for our west and east sides because she was on the front line of recovery.
We need a mayor with vision, leadership and the experience to continue to build on our progress. From my seat on City Council, Vernon is the mayor we need.
