Vietnam protest not a time for celebration

To the editor:
Forgive me if I choose not to celebrate or revel in the recent publicity surrounding the 50th anniversary of the student who publicly burned his draft card ('50 years on, recalling historic Vietnam protest,” Oct. 20).
Perhaps my feelings about the matter might be influenced somewhat by the fact that: a) I tried to enlist in the armed forces three times during the height of the Vietnam conflict, but was turned town each time due to my hearing disability; and b) four people that I knew who served and fought in Southeast Asia ultimately returned to Eastern Iowa in body bags.
