Vulgarity, decadence dragging culture down
The Gazette Opinion Staff

Complacency is much like standing on quicksand; given little time it can be all-consuming.
We seem, as a nation, to have fallen into an irretrievable syndrome in which we apparently have no interest in climbing out of this downward cultural spiral.
I recall when late night talk show host Jack Parr spoke of a water closet and was criticized for “on air” vulgarity. Now the “F” word, “pissed off” and references to human body parts is acceptable in many venues, including books.
Although vaginal yeast ads thankfully have faded, we are now bombarded with Viagra and Cialis 24/7. Ads, with couples, leave little to the imagination as well.
Games such as X-Box and the like pushing assault, stealing and murder are seen who knows the number of hours by the young as well as old. What some individuals are unable to do if differentiate the synthetic from the real world, hence unspeakable bloodshed.
Text messaging and cell phone abuses abound, trumping one-on-one human interaction. This is causing accidents. Some are banning their use while driving. Will we, in Iowa, legislatively follow? When complaining about the abuses, I've heard people say, “everyone's doing it.” Does that make it right? Will we continue to ignore the aforementioned decadent patterns or wait until it's too late?
