Social Security exists to help
The Gazette Opinion Staff

As you read this letter, I ask you to dwell on the words “Social Security.” It was meant to help those who, through sickness or injury, lack of a pension, as a result of low wages or the death of a spouse who provided the income, to have some kind of security.
The answer is easy. If you have income of over $150,000, you do not draw Social Security. If you have that kind of income, you are probably using that check to buy more toys, not security. Instead of raising the age and working the unfortunate from the cradle to the grave, do the following. If your net income is over $150,000, deduct what you would draw from Social Security and pay taxes on the remainder. It might mean one less toy for the fortunate but it would make Social Security secure for what it was designed.
The answer to fixing Social Security is in the name.
