(Harriet) Jayne Culver Perkins was born in West Union, Iowa, on August 10, 1916. Her father, Harry Culver, was a Methodist minister, so they, with her mother, sister, Eleanor and brother, Hillis (Bud) moved often. She grew up in Clinton, Cedar Falls and Mount Vernon, Iowa. She graduated from high school in Mitchell, S.D., but then returned to Mount Vernon to go to Cornell College, where she met “Perk,” aka Lyman or L.C. . After they had both graduated from Cornell, she taught for a year in Newhall, Iowa, while Perk finished his degree from the Palmer School of Chiropractic. They were married on August 5, 1939, in a ceremony conducted by her father.
When Perk set up his practice in Monticello, they decided it was time to start a family. Shortly after Nancy was born, Perk was drafted into the Navy. Jayne and Nancy followed him to Idaho, then to California where they lived until he was shipped out to Saipan, in the Mariana Islands. When he returned, Jim became the newest addition to the family. As the children grew up, Jayne was always very involved in school, church and social (especially bridge and golf) activities. When the children were gone, Jayne's mother died and her father and aunt came to live with them. When they had passed on Nancy married Stan Bruns and had Darren and Steve and Jim married Jean Bode and they had Sarah and David, giving Jayne four grandchildren on whom she doted. At this point in her life, she decided to go back to teaching, first at Sacred Heart in Monticello and later in Cascade. She and Perk traveled to Europe several times as well as many trips to visit kids, grandkids, friends and other family.
Three years after Perk died in January 1991, Jayne moved into a condo in Cedar Rapids, where she lived near Jim and Jean and across from the high school who Sarah and David attended. She took great pride in the arrival of her great-granddaughter, Brianna, Steve's daughter. In 2004, she moved into assisted living in Tennessee to be near Nancy and her second husband, Bob Green.
