CLINTON - Pinch-runner Tim Morris was thrown out at the plate to end the game last night as the Cedar Rapids Kernels edged the Clinton LumberKings, 2-1, at Alliant Energy Field.
Morris was running for John Hicks, who reached on a two-out error. Matt Browning then lined a ball to center field where Travis Witherspoon cut the ball off.
He hit first baseman Ricky Alvarez who fired to catcher Marcus Nidiffer to cut down Morris to end the game.
Witherspoon, who hit his 12th homer of the season to lead off the game, gave the Kernels (20-27 second half) the lead when he scored in the eighth on Rolando Gomez's double.
Left-hander Dakota Robinson (9-2) got the victory for Cedar Rapids, pitching two strong innings of relief.
Daniel Tillman pitched the ninth inning to record his 12th save.
