Sarby, Duane L.
Duane L. Sarby, 89, of Aurora, Ill., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Dec. 17, 2013, at Alden of Waterford in Aurora. Private services will be held in the spring in Olin.
Survivors include his children, Suzanne Miller, Debra (Tim) Price, Derl (Christy) Sarby and Dale Sarby; sister, Deanna Padgett; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Deane and Anita; brother, Derl; and son, Deane.
Duane was born and raised in Olin, Iowa and enlisted in the Air Corps, part of the Army of the United States, at age 18. He achieved the rank of First Lieutenant, P-38 Day Fighter Combat pilot, World War II.
After being discharged he returned to Iowa, where he lived many years before heading west to Colorado. He loved the mountains, but moved back to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he lived the next 16 years close to his best friend and son, Deane (deceased) and Ester Rexroat, his significant other (deceased). The final years were spent in Illinois close to his other children.
It has been said by people he has met that he was one of the most unique people they have ever known and will be remembered for his curiosity and love of life.
Special thanks to the wonderful staff at the Alden of Waterford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center and the staff at Family Centered Hospice.
