Letter: Glass Road received special treatment

Can someone please tell me what is so special about the neighborhoods surrounding Glass Road?

In the past, I've commented on how a large portion of Glass Road was completely resurfaced and received new curbing. This was a roadway that wasn't filled with potholes like a large majority of our streets are.

I've noticed that as streets are resurfaced now, part of the roadway is taken away from motorists and made into bike lanes. This wasn't done on Glass Road. And yet our city is supposed to be supporting a positive culture for bicyclists.

Now I read how residents in older neighborhoods are being told that part of the pavement improvements programs is to install sidewalks in neighborhoods that don't have any. If that is the case then I say install the type of sidewalks that were installed in the newer neighborhoods around Glass Road.

Those sidewalks are the skinniest sidewalks in town. I invite anyone to drive up and down the newly paved portion of Glass Road and observe the sidewalks on either side. They are only wide enough for one person to walk on them - the cost to install skinny sidewalks wouldn't be as great as what is being put in now.

I bet the older neighborhoods will be told they have to have the wider sidewalks taking up even more of their property. I have to ask - does the land not mean as much to the people in the older neighborhoods as it does to those around Glass Road?
