An Iowa State Patrol trooper Wednesday afternoon shot and killed a man who had escaped from a Wisconsin state prison and led authorities on a chase.
The trooper fired at the man, who was wanted in Wisconsin on probation violation and was suspected of motor vehicle theft, at around 1:15 p.m . Wednesday, according the Iowa Department of Public Safety.
Wisconsin authorities issued a warrant for the man Wednesday morning, and Iowa troopers spotted the man's vehicle at about noon. When he reentered Iowa after briefly heading into Minnesota, the Iowa State Patrol, Mitchell County Sheriff's Office and the Osage Police Department followed the man on County Road B-33 until they used a maneuver that caused the stolen car to roll over about four miles east of Floyd.
The man was shot and killed after he charged at a trooper while wielding a knife, authorities said. Another trooper first tried to taze the man but misfired, public safety officials said.
Officials said that the man's name won't be released until his family is notified.
The trooper has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, public safety officials said.
