CEDAR RAPIDS - AnnaBella Dobler had to wait a little longer for her playdate Tuesday morning.
The 21-month-old was in her car seat in a sport-utility vehicle around 8:50 a.m. when a car ran a red light and slammed into the SUV at the corner of 16th Avenue and West Post Road SW in Cedar Rapids. Airbags deployed, glass shattered and the SUV wound up on its side.
About 20 minutes after the accident, Dobler was in her father's arms, calmly nibbling on a banana.
"She screamed and cried (earlier)," said Matt Dobler, 32, of Cedar Rapids. "A couple people unloaded stuff and got her out through the back until I could get out."
Dobler said he was taking his daughter to his brother's house for some playtime.
"We were just killing time until Toys "R" Us opened up," Dobler said.
Police said a teenage boy was westbound on 16th Avenue SW when it collided with the northbound SUV. An officer at the scene said the boy, whose name was not immediately released, would be cited for disobeying a traffic control device.
Kevin Burrows, 54, of Cedar Rapids, heard the accident from his home down the street.
"It was a hell of a thump," Burrows said. "You could hear the Durango sliding on the cement. There were no squealing tires at all, so whatever speed he was going, that's what he hit him at."
Police said no one was injured in the two-vehicle crash.
