This is a stream of consciousness rundown of Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz's radio show.
I'm jumping in here after Dolph has talked to Iowa wrestling coach Tom Brands. Dolph did a great job, did his homework and showed he knew a lot about Iowa wrestling.
OK, Kirk Ferentz is in the Carlo O'Kelly's house.
- Some leaders have emerged. KF mentioned LB Josey Jewell. I would totally agree. The strides he's made from his redshirt freshman year to this season is fairly amazing, in development and knowledge of the game. (Jim Reid has done a terrific job with this group.)
- KF mentioned strong safety Miles Taylor, DE Parker Hesse and backup safety Brandon Snyder, who's made several noteworthy special teams plays, which isn't a prereq, but sure doesn't hurt.
'If you don't make plays on special teams, you're probably not going to be a good safety,” KF said.
OK, maybe it is a prereq. He also said Snyder has been doing a nice job studying and learning the free safety position.
I will keep updating. Please check back.
- I think it's Bubba the Trucker on the phone. He sounds like a giant man. Like 6-11 and 800 pounds. Seriously. He also sounds kind of southern. Then again, some southern Iowans do have a slight accent.
Bubba talked to Brian Ferentz, CJ Beathard and one other dude after last week's game. The message was one game at a time.
Someone get working on a 'Good Timey Radio Hour” Bubba the Trucker T-shirt.
- KF brought up Penn State from 2008. He said the Nits did some squawking about being third rather than second. Of course, you know what happened. The Hawkeyes knocked off Penn State. The Daniel Murray field goal stands as one of Dolph's greatest radio calls.
- Nate is a Florida fan calling into the Iowa radio show. Asks about SEC bias in the rankings.
Nate, put down the phone and go jogging. Why would you waste your time here? Nate is a Florida fan from Eagle Grove, so I guess I get the tie, but I'll never understand the fan from other team calling another team's radio show.
But, don't worry. This is the kind of thinking that I've lost track of caring about and will, ultimately, run me out of the biz.
- Anthony asks about Hayden Fry and team health.
OK, I like Anthony.
KF said Fry will still occasionally tell the same bad joke from 30 years ago.
Health updates:
KF: Gaining ground on health. Starting to get guys back. LeShun Daniels was a highlight last week. Jordan Canzeri looked good today in practice. (I think Canzeri doesn't play this week, but maybe dresses. I believe he will play next week.)
OT Boone Myers is back. OT Ike Boettger is close to getting back. Beathard has some issues (a lot of guys have issues, KF said, but they don't play QB). Not 100 percent. Part of football.
Counting on CJB to be out there entire season, KF said. He's working in practice. He'll be OK, but not during season. Needs prolonged time off to heal.
So, status quo on CJB.
- Dolph is talking about robotical cars.
Dolph is talking about a robotical Volvo that's totally is robotic. Built by an Iowa prof. Here's the website. I want one.
IT PARALELL PARKS ITSELF!!!!!
KF quipped: How many cars did it take to get to the one that is automated?
- Jim from Cedar Falls. I always think he sounds a little like Winnie the Pooh.
Long kick returns by Likely. Wide lane opened. Blocking did it and Likley. Winnie the Pooh wants answers.
KF: In a nutshell, bad play on our part. Dovetails to problems Iowa had in the running game against Indiana last season. Kickoff coverage is a good defensive play. Someone has to set contain. The other nine have to move to the ball in the right way. They have to beat blocks and get to the ballcarrier. Didn't contain, didn't squeeze, got locked up on blocks. Confident they'll get it back. Worked on it this week.
- Dave in George. Dave is pricing 15-person vans for the trip to Indianapolis.
!!!!!!!!!!
SIMMER DOWN DAVE OF GEORGE COME BACK TO US DAVE GEORGE
Dave wants a 4-4 defense vs. Indiana.
KF: Might mix it up, but they have the tempo and Iowa probably won't be able to sub. Best thing Iowa can do is play its base defense. Good throwing team. They balance with the run. Best O-line Iowa has played, KF said. It's a physical group.
Best O-line Iowa has played? That gets my attention.
- I guess there's a pirate ship in Ida Grove. Either that or New Kirk is on the Ben and Jerry ice cream again.
- TOMMEEEEEEEEEEE from Des Moines. I think Tommy has lost a step this year.
Says good job on James Ferentz playing in the NFL for the Broncos.
New Kirk just said he watched YouTube. Aw man, this Ben and Jerry is strong stuff.
I don't like James Ferentz blocking Packers. I definitely vote against this.
- Rhino from Moville (no way this is real, man).
Asks if KF is still on the phone. Says KF and Ned Yost are twins. Loves them both.
'Hope it turns out as well for us as it did for them,” KF said.
The Royals did win the World Series.
Ryno is bothered by 'that Stanford.” It is what it is.
Asks about the Paulsen twins, who hail from Moville.
Both doing a good job. Great work ethic. Great personalities. Totally redshirting this season.
- Shirley has a question about Marshall Koehn range.
KF said he believes Koehn's 57-yarder could've been good from 7 yards farther. 'An NFL-type leg.”
Dolph thanks KF for showing up to the Hawk Talk Radio Show with Kirk Ferentz.
Good night.
