Stop with excessive snow days
The Gazette Opinion Staff

My friends and I have often lamented the number of snow days our kids have in Cedar Rapids, especially when the snow has been predicted and preparations can be made. I have begrudgingly accepted the rationales; teachers have to drive in from distances even if the kids could walk to school, busing isn't safe, etc.
But Monday night, I was on the phone with a friend in Madison, Wis., and we discussed the expected 4 inches of snow. She said that they never had snow days. Her child was in ninth grade and there had so far been a total of maybe two snow days since kindergarten. I was shocked. What has the Madison school district figured out that we in Cedar Rapids have not?
And I have heard that sometimes the various local administrators all confer. If that is true, please stop. There should be no reason that Cedar Rapids has to have a snow day just because Mount Vernon or College Community does.
