The adjutant general of the Iowa National Guard says its soldiers are preparing for the largest deployment in a generation but will still be able to handle domestic emergencies.
Brig. Gen. Timothy Orr told the Legislature Tuesday that guard officials in nine Midwestern states are coordinating efforts to handle domestic emergencies.
Orr says the guard is facing pressure with deployments likely to grow this year because of the nation's increasing commitment to Afghanistan.
More than 3,000 Iowa troops are scheduled to be deployed later this year. It will be the largest single deployment of Iowa troops since World War II.
Orr says the guard has taken steps to deal with the deployment.
