You can “live long and prosper” in the little town of Riverside, which has made a name for itself in science fiction and movie history by staking its claim as the future birthplace of Star Trek's Captain James T. Kirk.
Years ago, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry had written that Kirk “was born in a small town in the state of Iowa.” Back in 1984, Steve Miller, a Riverside City Council member, wrote to Roddenberry, asking if Riverside could be that town. The answer was yes. Today, you can enjoy a summer celebration called TrekFest, where you can let your inner geek out.
This year's event will be held June 29 and 30. The weekend usually includes a trek trivia contest, a sci-fi swap meet, and Federation games, in addition to a parade, live bands, and tons of other activities.
While you're in town, check out Captain Kirk's birthstone, marking Riverside as his future birthplace in the year 2,228. And stop by the Voyage Home Museum, also known as the Riverside History Center, located at 361 E. First St. If you've always wanted to play the part made famous by William Shatner, look for the great photo op outside, next to a replica of the Enterprise starship.
