Resolve problems, but keep DNR land leases
Jan. 13, 2012 11:58 pm
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is responsible for protecting and enhancing widely diverse wildlife and providing recreational opportunities to Iowans with many varied natural resource interests. I have visited countless public lands managed by the DNR, throughout the state of Iowa, including Sny Magill Creek Wildlife Management Area, where a non-compliant lessee prompted Timothy Mason's comments in the Jan. 2 Gazette article “DNR as landlord.” The DNR appropriately remedied that situation.
Agriculture is essential for the success of wildlife adapted to Iowa's current natural environment. Leasing is the primary method the DNR utilizes to manage wildlife habitat. Those leases are a partnership between the DNR and Iowa's farmers that provide necessary management the DNR cannot provide alone.
Mason stated “there is no need for this (leasing) other than money.” Making money is not the purpose of the leases. Mason and others calling for DNR's leases to be curtailed or eliminated is shortsighted. The Sny Magill incident does not justify sacrifice of a system successful throughout Iowa. Rather, I encourage Mason to work with the DNR to address his specific concerns. Participation of the farming community in management of DNR land must be preserved.
