Knowledge devalued in education
As an observer of U.S. educational trends the past 30 years, this is what I have learned:
-- A good self-concept is more important than knowledge.
-- Creativity is more important than knowledge.
-- Getting good grades is more important than knowledge.
-- Athletic prowess is more important than knowledge.
-- Unfettered self-expression is more important than knowledge.
-- Proper attitudes toward socially sensitive issues are more important than knowledge.
If these observations are correct, why should we be concerned if our students rank 20th to 30th among the world's countries in knowledge of basic educational disciplines such as science and mathematics?
