BACKPACKS: Some Cedar Rapids families affected by cancer are getting some timely back-to-school assistance from the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center at Mercy Medical Center. The center is giving away backpacks filled with school supplies to 33 kids from families with a member receiving treatment.

FREE VACCINE: Johnson County's Vaccine for Children program offers eligible kids offers back-to-school immunizations at no cost. Making sure kids' vaccinations are current before returning to school protects them from a long list of diseases. And in Iowa, it's the law.

STATE FAIR POLITICS: Amid a barrage of negative TV ads and big money campaigns, it's nice to see politicians wading into the crowds at the Iowa State Fair. They'll get a chance to meet and hear from a lot of Iowans without a net or a filter. And we'll get to see just how many of the fair's 69 food items on a stick they can handle.
