Charles Opatrny, 96, passed away Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, at his home in Evergreen Estates. As per his request, no services are planned.
Charles is survived by his son, John Opatrny; and special friend, Florence Ramsay, both of Cedar Rapids; and his nieces and nephews in France and the Czech Republic.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.
Charles was born to Anna and Joseph Opatrny on Aug. 4, 1918, in Cleveland, Ohio. At 2 years old he and his family returned to Czechoslovakia, where he completed his education and worked in international business. He returned to the United States where he eventually settled in Cedar Rapids, working for National Oats. He also taught German, French, Spanish and Czech. At 80, he earned master's degrees in French and German from UNI.
He was a devoted supporter of the National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library. Charles was an avid reader who also enjoyed classical music and opera.
