To the editor:
Regarding the Nov. 17 article 'Corbett group pushes flat tax, clean water”:
Hopefully Ron Corbett's 'think tank” can do better than proposing to raise the Iowa sales tax by 1 percent and implementing a flat tax to stop the flow of wealth from the state. From the article it is not clear how wealth was defined by the group or how many wealthy people have left the state, so it is difficult to understand the magnitude of this 'problem.”
Also, it's not clear how the group determined that the income tax rate, instead of the warmer winter climates (and other attractions) of Florida, Arizona, and Texas, was the major factor in driving the wealthier people from the state. It is interesting that the focus of this group is on increasing taxes (hidden behind cleaner water) instead of education, jobs, and creatively improving government efficiency - things that would help Iowa become a more attractive state for residents and those people looking to relocate.
