Stream restoration protects against floods
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Dec. 10, 2011 7:45 am
Orlan Love's Nov. 30 article (“Man-made miracle”) about the successful efforts of Mike Osterholm to restore a trout stream is good news for more than trout, native grasses and wildlife.
His work enables this tiny tributary stream to slow, cool and cleanse water. By increasing the ecological health of Brook Creek, he slightly reduced flood crests downstream. If dozens of people would follow his example and restore the health of tributary streams, Iowans would enjoy reduced odds of flooding and its damage.
Congratulations to Mr. Osterholm for his vision and hard work. May he be emulated.
