Police protect us and keep us safe

To the editor:
I'm a retired police officer from Indiana and still miss it. Ninety-nine percent of police are good people and do a very good job. If you have never been a police officer, you have no idea what they go through. On some calls, you may have two or three seconds to make a decision and if you don't make the right decision, it might cost you your life. Once you're dead, you're dead, and most people could not care less.
This thing in Ferguson is a travesty. I feel sorry for Michael Brown's family and the people of Ferguson. The people that burn the stores or loot are criminals. I hope it never happens here in our city, but it could. We have a lot of people out there that don't understand our justice system and don't care about our laws. If we didn't have police, you talk about chaos in our country, it would be like the old west.
