The University of Iowa has appointed a new director of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center in the Carver College of Medicine.
Dr. E. Dale Abel will serve as the director and also hold the John B. Stokes III Chair in Diabetes Research, UI officials announced. His appointment was effective June 30. Abel joins the UI from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, where he was chief of the Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Diabetes division, and professor of medicine and biochemistry.
The center was established through a $25 million gift from the Fraternal Order of Eagles in 2008 and will be housed within the UI Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Building, now under construction and slated to open in June 2014.
Abel replaces Dr. Daryl Granner, who was founding director of the FOE Diabetes Research Center. Granner will remain on the faculty as an adviser as Founding Director Emeriti.
