Running back might be really interesting today.
Running back Jordan Canzeri is out today. He's not bounced back from the ankle injury he suffered in the second quarter against Maryland two weeks ago. He had it going and now this year seems like a snakebite for the junior.
So, lots of senior RB Mark Weisman and probably a lot of senior RB Damon Bullock. Some of reddshirt freshman Jonathan Parker, maybe more than the jet sweep special. And then, running backs coach Chris White, told the school's official website (Pravda) that redshirt freshman Akrum Wadley might play today.
A lot you are interested in Wadley. Here's what I wrote about Wadley when he signed in 2013. OK, let's not get crazy with expectations here. Seriously. A couple factors: If they thought Wadley would've been able to help them, I think he probably would've played by now. And he's not carried the ball in almost two years. Let's keep it real.
- I don't think C.J. Beathard plays. I think that was decided when Jake Rudock answered the call well against Indiana. Let's not skip ahead to transfer talk. OK, you can do that. I talked to Beathard this week. He's locked into the next five weeks. He said anything can happen and it can.
Officially, KF said 'we'll let them both go.” I think you know what that means.
- The QBs are out and long tossing.
The only one who's going sleeveless is tight end Jake Duzey. He's from somewhere in Michigan. Today's mid-20s is nothing for him.
- How does WR change in the immediated after Derrick Willies' departure? Walk-on Andrew Stone is out doing some long toss.
Willies flashed in his few opportunities. He was out the last two weeks, so it's hard to say the offense will be missing anything.
The real question is does the offense NEED something. That is the question.
- Iowa is wearing helmets honoring the military today.
Here's the description (hopefully, I'll be able to find a pic from the press box): The Tiger Hawk on the right temple is in camo. No Tiger Hawk on the left side, honoring all the men and women in the military who've made the ultimate sacfrifice.
It's a beautiful sentiment.
- There's really no wind here today. The ribbons on the uprights are barely moving.
I think KF would let Koehn try a 50-plus.
- Northwestern's schedule: at Penn State, Wisconsin, a 24-17 loss at Minnesota and Nebraska.
It's safe to say the Wildcats have had the much tougher schedule. We've been over this with Iowa. The Hawkeyes haven't beaten a team above .500 this season. I think that's kind of significant.
- Iowa AD Gary Barta said on radio that he has 'thousands of advisers.” That's you guys. He also said Iowa is 5-2 and has all of its goals in front of it.
That's true. Today it has to keep that goal in front of it.
- According to Iowa radio, NU S Ibraheim Campbell is a game-time decision.
- LB Chad Gilson is getting FB reps. Apparently, this is a relatively easy transition. He's wearing No. 48.
- According to Iowa radio, high ankle sprain for Canzeri. TE George Kittle also out today. Injury undisclosed.
- Boone Myers is No. LT today with Boettger at G. Welsh with the 2s. Croston No. 2 RT.
- Wadley gets a rep with first team in team drills.
- Jordan Walsh is RG. Austin Blythe at LG. Tommy Gaul at C.
- KF wants to see yards per carry go up. I think that's an imperative.
- Junior Travis Perry starting at MLB and Alston over to WLB. Freshman Josey Jewell has been injured, but practiced this week.
- Derrick . . . Mitchell is in uniform for Iowa. I don't see Andre Harris.
- All during the pregame radio, from Barta to Kirk Ferentz, there was a lot of lamentation over the Maryland loss. I mean a lot a lot. There were definite lessons to be learned. Did they?
OK, 16 minutes to kickoff. See you on the other side.
