Police have opened an investigation after a toddler suffered severe burns at a Cedar Rapids home on Sunday.
The 17-month-old girl has life-threatening injuries and is hospitalized at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, police Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said. Police first learned about the incident when they were called to St. Luke's Hospital around 7:15 p.m. Sunday.
Hamblin said the girl was burned at 1623 10th Ave. SW. By the time police got to St. Luke's, the girl had already been flown by air ambulance to the Iowa City hospital.
Investigators interviewed the girl's parents, talked to emergency room staff and executed a search warrant at the home Sunday night. Hamblin said the parents offered an explanation for the burns, but she declined to elaborate due to the ongoing investigation.
“They were very, very cooperative,” Hamblin said.
More details are expected to be released when the investigation wraps up, possibly by the end of the week. The Department of Human Services is also involved in the case, Hamblin said. No charges have been filed and names of those involved have not been released.
