To the editor:
Here we go again. First we were convinced that the ice rink would bring lots of people to Cedar Rapids and be self-supporting. The first time they needed maintenance, they came to the city. The story repeated itself with the Kernels stadium.
After the flood, the library was deemed not salvageable so it was sold for a low price to a company that made it serviceable. Then we built a state-of-the-art library with lots of windows, open space and high ceilings making it expensive to heat and cool. Now they're asking us to pay more taxes so they can cover their day-to-day operating expenses. Why wasn't this thought of when they were planning the library? This is not a one-time tax. This is a permanent one we'll live with forever.
City leaders should learn to live within their income like the rest of us. I don't have a money tree. I have to juggle the money I have to make it work. So should our city leaders! Stop spending so much on curbside tables and rebuilding Greene Square Park and keep it to necessities.
