CLASS 1A
English Valleys (8-15) vs. East Greene (13-13) - Talk about two Cinderella clubs. Someone here will make a very unexpected trip to Des Moines for the state tournament next week. East Greene shocked Cedar Falls NU High in its district final Saturday night, 6-4. EV finished the regular season 5-15 but stunned fellow South Iowa Cedar League foes Keota, Sigourney and BGM in districts. The Bears went 0-6 against those clubs in the regular season. Senior Kendall Gent is the team's top hitter and pitcher, averaging over a strikeout per inning. East Greene's Tyler Cooklin has a .500 batting average and 21 stolen bases. English Valleys has never made it to state state baseball tournament, East Greene was there in 2009.
Iowa Mennonite (16-12) vs. Preston (21-11) - IMS' record might not be a whole lot to look at, but consider it played a mess of Class 2A and 3A clubs in the regular season. The team is battle tested, for sure. IMS won the 1A title in 2007 and advanced back to state the following season. Preston made its first appearance last season. Jackson Brokaw has a .427 batting average to lead IMS. Sophomore Cameron Gingerich has a 7-2 pitching record and 1.52 ERA. Sophomore Colton Bormann is a .600 hitter for Preston, while junior Alex Hinerichsen has seven home runs.
CLASS 2A
Iowa City Regina (23-12) vs. Davis County (29-4) at Wapello - Five state tourney appearances for Regina, the last one in 2000. The Regals have finished second three times (1988, 1991 and 2000). Davis County lost in the semifinals of last year's tournament. Regina has six hitters with averages of .378 or above, including Jack Verducci (.440), who leads the club in doubles, home runs and RBIs. Pitcher Danny Pacha, who should throw Monday night, is 11-0 with a 1.54 ERA. Davis County should counter with Calvin Matthews (9-1, 0.58 ERA). He has struck out 110 and given up just 25 hits in 60 innings. The Mustangs have four players with 10-plus home runs, including Matthews' team-leading 12.
North Fayette (29-14) at Dyersville Beckman (28-15) - A pair of Northeast Iowa perennial powers square off here. Beckman has been to state 15 times and won three championships. Head coach Tom Jenk Jr. surpassed 900 career victories toward the end of the regular season. Robbie Anstoetter is hitting .487 with 29 stolen bases. Nate Steger has 11 home runs and 60 RBIs. North Fayette has been to state three times under fellow successful veteran coach Dan Hovden, the last time in 2007. Junior Jake Greco is hitting .550 with 11 home runs, 62 RBIs, 17 doubles and 17 stolen bases. This one could be a slugfest.
