ANOTHER NATIONAL AWARD:
One of the 2014 American Public Works Association's Public Works Projects of the Year is the restoration of Cedar Rapids' historic Paramount Theatre. The $35 million project expanded the capabilities of the facility, which was swamped by the 2008 flood. It's the second such award in three years for the city. Cedar Rapids won for 2012 renovations of another flood-ravaged public building, the former federal courthouse at 101 First St. SE that now serves as City Hall.

STARTING YOUNG:
Kudos to 19 graduating students from Cedar Rapids and nearby communities who gave blood at least eight times before graduating from high school, earning the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center's Gallon Grad distinction. Hopefully, that experience transforms into a lifetime of giving.

FEEDING KIDS:
A volunteer group in North Liberty has committed to providing a free lunch program to hungry kids this summer. North Liberty Unity Coalition is doing it without government assistance, and so far has raised $2,500 in donations toward the cost of $5,000. The program could be a boost for many working families, especially those whose children are among the 550 who live in households with incomes below federal poverty levels. Some of these kids may not get adequate nutrition when school is not in session.
