Video: PTL highlights, impressions
Jul. 19, 2010 1:52 pm
It's easy for me to strictly focus on Iowa's men's basketball players at the Prime Time League, mainly because that's the topic I cover around-the-clock.
The next few sessions I'm going to spend more time looking at the other players in the league, including those at Northern Iowa and some of the potential Division I athletes at junior colleges.
UNI's Jake Koch was a dependable reserve for the Panthers last year. Whether it's the style of play or lack of opportunity, Koch hasn't produced eye-popping statistics in PTL action. (Insert "So What" quote here).
Koch popped a pair of 3-pointers late in his team's comeback win on Sunday. He's strong and has a solid outside shot. The only issue for him is it's difficult to get enough shots on his team. That's not a big deal.
UNI center Austin Pehl is one of the few college-aged strong post players in the PTL. He'd work in good tandem in Lucas O'Rear this year, but Pehl has a ways to go to replace Jordan Eglseder.
Former Solon prep Matt Morrison took a red-shirt season last year at UNI. He looked a little out of place last summer in the PTL but really has matured as a point guard this year. He's got a good outside shot, runs the floor well and is a very good passer.
Fellow UNI teammate Marc Sonnen has provided toughness in PTL action. He's a potential leader for the Panthers.
Former Waterloo East prep Jaron Nash is skinnnnnnny, but he's explosive. He red-shirted last year at Tyler (Texas) Junior College alongside former Iowa City High prep Malcolm Moore. Nash will have three seasons of Division I eligibility after this upcoming season. If Nash develops a perimeter game, he can be a solid D-I grab for someone (West Virginia is very interested).
Here are some videos from Sunday's action:
George Etre Inc./ Culver's of Coralville's Melsahn Basabe (33) puts up a shot around LL Pelling/ Goodfellow Printing's Austin Pehl (33) during their Prime Time League game Tuesday, June 15, 2010 at the North Liberty Community Center in North Liberty. (Brian Ray/ SourceMedia Group News)
