Just-renovated Brown Apartments competing for place on National Register of Historic Places
Aug. 11, 2009 2:45 pm
The 95-year-old, brick-faced Brown Apartments at 1234 Fourth Ave. SE is under consideration to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The state's National Register Nominations Review Committee will consider the Brown Apartments' nomination at its meeting on Oct. 9.
The 15-unit apartment building has just been brought back to life with the help of $2.3 million in government affordable housing tax credits and the intervention by Four Oaks and its subsidiary, The Affordable Housing Network.
The Brown Apartments had been one of the properties of the MidAmerica Housing Partnership until that nonprofit housing agency failed. Four Oaks stepped in, created its own housing network and took control of many of MidAmerica's properties, including the Brown Apartments.
The renovation of the Brown Apartments was celebrated on May 21 with a ribbon-cutting event attended by state and local officials.
