Respect the worth of every person
The Gazette Opinion Staff
Jan. 31, 2011 1:25 pm
Legislation has been introduced in the Iowa House to deny the civil rights of Iowans who are lesbian, gay or bisexual. Having raised our family in Iowa, our family has always appreciated the live-and-let-live attitude that demonstrates the basic fairness that we believe characterizes Iowans. At our best, we respect each other enough to remember the worth and dignity of every person instead of attacking their rights to live within the law.
It has been our blessing to know a fair number of gay, lesbian and bisexual people. Sure they have human flaws, but no more than any of us do. They do their best to raise loving families, work, pay taxes and nurture hope. If they are religious, they pray for the best for their country, friends, family and children just like the rest of us do. These are indeed examples of family friendly values.
We say if they find a partner to share their lives with, they can certainly do no worse than heterosexuals have done regardless of religious affiliation. Our family will not stand by and let these civil rights be stripped from our friends and acquaintances. On behalf of Hannah Glasson-Darling, Iowa City; Kathleen Darling, West Branch; Mirri Glasson-Darling, Juneau, Alaska.
